Children’s Dental Health: Common Problems and Solutions

Children's Dental Health

Good oral health for children is very important. Healthy habits set early can lead to a lifetime of strong, healthy teeth. Here are some common dental problems in children and simple, everyday solutions that can help to prevent them.

1. Dental Caries

Tooth decay is a serious problem for children. It usually occurs when children consume food that contains sugar or from poor and infrequent brushing habits. This can result in serious dental problems. The solution is to try and reduce sugary foods and drinks and helping your child brush their teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Regular dental checkups will also help. Dentists apply sealants or fluoride treatments that protect your child’s teeth.

2. Habit of Sucking Thumb and Using Pacifier

Many young children suck their thumbs or take pacifiers. This is normal; however, when it continues beyond age 3, it can cause crooked teeth or affect the shape of the mouth. To eliminate this habit, one could try positive reinforcement or other methods to self-soothe.

3. Teething Pain

Teething starts around six months but can begin earlier for some babies. Teething can be painful and often causes them to be fussy, drooly, or chew on objects more than usual. To soothe discomfort, gently rub their gums with your finger or a cold wet wash cloth. A chilled but not frozen teether ring also works. DO NOT give any teething medicines that contain benzocaine because these are harmful to young children.

4. Gum Disease

Gingivitis or gum disease can affect in children. This is usually due to poor brushing and flossing. Signs include bleeding, red, swollen gums. Regular brushing and flossing will reduce the possibility of gum disease. Teaching children to brush their gums as well as their teeth reduces plaque. If gum disease has begun, your Milton dentist may recommend cleanings at periodic intervals.

5. Dental Anxiety

Many children have been anxious about visiting a dentist. You might help reduce some anxiety by describing the events that will take place and even taking them on a preliminary visit to the office before an appointment. Milton Dentists specializing in pediatric care often make the visit as pleasant as possible for children.

Understanding these common dental issues and resolving them early, parents are able to help their children develop good oral health habits. Regular brushing, visits to the dentist, and good hygiene practice support children in long term dental health and provide them with the confidence in caring for their own teeth.
