With the latest advancements in dental technology, wisdom tooth extraction is now a safe and efficient process, ensuring that you can bid farewell to the pain and discomfort caused by these pesky molars.

First and foremost, let’s address the big question: why do we need wisdom teeth removal at our Milton dental office in the first place? Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, often causing pain, swelling, and other complications. In many cases, there simply isn’t enough room in the jaw for these additional teeth, leading to overcrowding, misalignment, and even infection. Wisdom tooth extraction in Milton, therefore, is a crucial step in maintaining optimal oral health, ensuring that your smile remains radiant and pain-free for years to come!

Now that we understand the importance of wisdom teeth removal, let’s dive into the benefits of this essential procedure. First and foremost, wisdom tooth extraction can alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth, allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods and activities without the constant nagging of dental pain. Furthermore, by removing these troublesome teeth, you can prevent potential damage to adjacent teeth, gum tissue, and bone, preserving the integrity of your entire dental structure.

Wisdom tooth removal may be done in the dental office or at the hospital. As for the procedure itself, wisdom tooth extraction is a relatively straightforward and efficient process, thanks to the expertise of dental professionals and cutting-edge technology.

Any infections prior to the surgery need to be treated, you may need antibiotics to treat your infection.  The first step involves a thorough examination of your oral health, including X-rays, to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. Once the decision to proceed with wisdom teeth removal has been made, your dentist or oral surgeon will administer local anesthesia or sedation to ensure a comfortable and pain-free experience. Using specialized tools and techniques, they will then gently remove the wisdom teeth, taking care to minimize any damage to the surrounding tissues. Finally, sutures may be placed to facilitate healing, and you’ll be provided with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

When the dentist removes the wisdom tooth, they peel off the gum tissue that lies over the tooth and takes out any bone that is covering the tooth.  The tissue joining the tooth to the bone is removed and then the tooth is removed.  If it is easier for the dentist to remove the tooth by cutting it into tiny pieces, they will do this as well.  Due to the severity of the surgery in your mouth, you may require stitches, these will dissolve in your mouth; a cotton gauze is placed in your mouth to help prevent bleeding.

Generally you will see improvement in a few days; your dentist will prescribe painkillers to take as necessary.   There are a few guidelines that can be followed to have a safe and speedy recovery:

  1. Change gauze regularly to keep good hygiene
  2. Stay in a sitting position, at least for the first day, so that the bleeding stops
  3. Apply ice to the cheek for 15-20 minutes the first day to reduce swelling
  4. Make sure you do not do any strenuous activity as this can increase bleeding
  5. Eat only foods prescribed by your dentist
  6. Do not use a straw the first few days as this can postpone the healing process
  7. The day after the surgery, soak your mouth in warm salt water. This helps reduce the pain and swelling
  8. Do not smoke for 24 hours after surgery, this can cause an infection and delay healing process
  9. Ensure that you brush your teeth and tongue gently so as not to cause bleeding
  10. You may have a follow up appointment to remove the stitches or to check on the healing
